By 1998 Birch Mountain Resources obtained mineral exploration permits over an extensive area in the Athabasca region where limestone was close to the surface. These permits were originally evaluated for precious metals and later for their potential for aggregates and reagent limestone products. |

They're tiny, but we can see gold, platinum, palladium, and other precious metal microparticles in the limestone. We have focused on these microparticles - seen here in a scanning electron microscope image - and continue in our quest for reliable analytical and extraction methods.
