Birch Mountain Resources Ltd. opened the Muskeg Valley Quarry in northeast Alberta on its mineral leases. The location of the quarry is approximately 60 km north of the city of Fort McMurray in Township 94, Range 10W4. The quarry is situated in one of the few locations in the Fort McMurray region where limestone is accessible at surface. limestone reserves are 40 m (131 ft) thick. Information shows the rock to be quarried is laterally continuous through the proposed quarry area and is some of the most competent in the region. Additionally the company plans to construct and operate a quicklime plant. The location is central to a number of oil sands operators who use large amounts of aggregate and quicklime products.
