10,000 Years Ago The last ice age, with extensive ice sheets over North America, ended about 10,000 years ago. The ice was three to four kilometers thick and when it melted it left Lake Agassiz stretching from Inuvik to the St. Laurence. 9,900 years ago Lake Agassiz broke through ice dams flooding down the Clearwater River. The resulting flood created a wall of water that roared down the Athabasca River around the Fort Hills into Lake McConnell, parts of which are now Lake Athabasca.
